The I&R Support Center hosts webinars on a regular basis with I&R Specialists concerning topics of interest to those who work in the field of aging and disability Information and Referral/Assistance. Webinars are recorded and are available for on-demand viewing at no cost on ADvancing States IQ, our online learning center. VA System of Care

This webinar discussed resources for caregivers of veterans. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Caregiver Support Program offers a menu of services to support family members and friends who care for Veterans at home and in their communities. The VA Caregiver Support Line is a national call center staffed by licensed social workers, who provide information and assist caregivers and Veterans in accessing services and supports through the VA. Our presenter was Christy Reynolds, LMSW, Program Coordinator with the VA Caregiver Support Line.

Building Capacity to Serve Older Adults with Mental Health Conditions

This webinar discussed serving older adults with mental health conditions and capacity-building initiatives for this population. Our presenter, Jocelyn Chen Wise, serves as Project Director at the Fuqua Center for Late-Life Depression, an initiative of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at Emory University. As Project Director, Jocelyn provides support for community projects including the Fuqua Center’s work in affordable senior housing, and she serves as a social worker in the outpatient geriatric psychiatry clinic to assist individuals and families navigating mental health and aging resources.

ADA Network National Overview

This webinar discussed how the resources and training of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) National Network can assist you in this work. This webinar provided an overview of the ten regional ADA centers and their activities, reviewed the basics of ADA civil rights protections, and highlighted how the ADA applies to older adults with age-onset disabilities. Our presenter was Michael Richardson, Director of the Northwest ADA Center.

Responding to Elder Abuse: Resource for Information and Referral Programs

This webinar shared about the resources of the U.S Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Elder Justice Initiative. Our presenters shared key statistics on elder abuse, provided an overview of the types and warning signs of abuse, and demonstrated the resources available through the Elder Justice Initiative website. The webinar also highlighted the role of the national Eldercare Locator. This webinar is brought to you by ADvancing States’s I&R Support Center, AIRS and n4a. Our presenters were Maria Shumar, Victim Specialist Consultant, and Andy Mao, Elder Justice Initiative Coordinator, from the Department of Justice, and Patrice Earnest, Director, Eldercare Locator, n4a.

Guardianship: Key Concepts for I&R/A Professionals 

This training covers the basics of guardianship including the process of becoming a guardian, responsibilities of the guardian, the difference between guardianship and powers of attorney and a discussion on when a guardianship may be necessary. To help I&R/A specialists gain more insight into guardianship issues, our presenter, Kim Grier, Adult Guardianship Specialist, Georgia Department of Human Services, shares her expertise on this topic.

An Overview of the Paralysis Resource Center 

The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation's Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) promotes the health and well-being of people living with a spinal cord injury, mobility impairment, and paralysis by providing comprehensive information, and resources and referral services. This webinar teaches attendees about the Paralysis Resource Center, including the Center's I&R services; resources on spinal cord injury, paralysis and mobility related disabilities; peer support program; and the needs of individuals and families served by the Center. This webinar was presented by Bernadette Mauro, Director of Information and Resource Services.
