Supporting Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and Their Aging Caregivers

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released a set of resources addressing the needs of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) living with, and receiving care from, aging parents or guardians. The resources cover a range of topics, including interagency partnerships, engagement and navigation support, person- and family-centered support systems, and future planning, all designed to aid state Medicaid and partner agencies in better serving this population. Registration is Open for the 2023 NTP Virtual Workshops

Registration is now open for the 2023 Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) National Training Program (NTP) virtual workshops. Session dates and topics for the upcoming week are as follows: August 1st: Coordination of Benefits August 2nd: Medicare Scenarios (Casework Session) August 3rd: Medicare for People with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) All sessions will start at 1:00 p.m. and conclude no later than 3:30 p.m. ET.

Caregiver Worksheets

The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has created a series of caregiver worksheets designed to assist in organizing and managing caregiving responsibilities effectively. These worksheets cover a range of topics, including coordinating caregiving tasks, ensuring home safety, hiring care providers, considering the option of moving an older adult into one's home, managing medications, and organizing important documents. Caregivers can download and utilize these worksheets to streamline their caregiving efforts and maintain essential information in an organized manner.

Improving Transportation for Older Adults with Vision Loss

The National Aging and Disability Transportation Center (NADTC) has published a comprehensive resource guide that offers guidance to transportation providers on how to better serve older passengers with vision loss. The guide addresses the pervasive and often unrecognized issue of age-related vision changes, the unique challenges that older adults with vision loss face when using transportation services, and effective strategies that transportation providers can use to improve their services. This resource also discusses the critical role of effective communication in addressing these challenges and provides travel training and orientation and mobility (O&M) to help older riders with vision loss navigate the transportation system.

CMS Launches Webpage to Share Innovative State Actions to Expand Medicaid Home and Community-based Services

On Thursday, October 21, 2021 CMS launched a new “one-stop shop” for state Medicaid agencies and stakeholders on Medicaid.gov to advance transparency and innovation for home and community-based services. Through this new webpage, state Medicaid agencies and stakeholders can access information about states’ plans to enhance, expand, and strengthen home and community-based services across the country using new Medicaid funding made available by the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (ARP).

Older Adults’ Equity Collaborative Resource Library

Funded by ACL, this resource library collects digital materials from the Older Adults' Equity Collaborative member organizations to provide tools and guidance to the aging services network, providers, older adults and family caregivers. The resources included cover topics of social isolation and mental health, Alzheimer's and Dementia, disabilities, caregiving, retirement income and security, and emergency planning.

Older Americans Act: HHS Could Help Rural Service Providers by Centralizing Information on Promising Practices

This report discusses how HHS can help rural service providers cope with the challenges of meeting the demand for home and community-based services in rural areas. Specifically, GAO recommends the consolidation of information regarding promising practices to allow local officials and rural service providers to more readily access this information.
