National Inventory of Self-Directed Long-Term Services and Supports Programs

AARP recently released the “National Inventory of Self‑Directed Long-Term Services and Supports Programs,” building upon the 2023 LTSS State Scorecard and previous inventories to provide an overview of all publicly funded self-directed Long-Term Services and Supports (LTSS) nationwide. This inventory includes estimates of numbers of participants, populations served, funding sources, and other key variables, and covers significant trends influencing the overall LTSS landscape, such as the well-documented national shortage of direct care workers. Bridging the Gap: Insights into Strengthening the Self-Directed Workforce

Applied Self-Direction recently published a paper that aims to provide insights on the self-direction workforce from key stakeholders. With the support of Elevance Health, Applied Self-Direction held an Executive Roundtable Series with experts to discuss pertinent themes and issues. They then conducted a national survey of people who self-direct, representatives, and direct care workers to understand their experiences and ideas for addressing workforce challenges. VA Faces Challenges in Meeting Demand for Long-Term Care

On March 3, 2020, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report that details challenges the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) faces in meeting growing demand for long-term care (LTC). Three major challenges the VA faces includes workforce shortages, ailing care geographically, and meeting needs for specialty care. The VA currently provides or pays for LTC for over 500,000 veterans in the U.S. in both institutional and HCBS settings.

Michigan Policy Brief: Direct Care Workforce Shortage

Like many states, Michigan is facing a looming workforce shortage as their aging population grows. This policy brief from the Michigan Aging & Adult Services Agency highlights the challenges and opportunities in addressing the state's direct care workforce (DCW) issues.
