On August 20, 2010, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the selection of Linda Nablo as Director of the Division of State Children's Health Insurance for the Center for Medicaid, Survey and Certification (CMSC). Nablo comes to CMS with over 29 years of experience in state government, during which time she gained extensive expertise in program administration, coalition building, public health policy, and community development. James Toews, NASUAD Vice President and Assistant Director of the Oregon Department of Human Services, Seniors and People with Physical Disabilities, commends Nablo’s distinguished career, saying “She has devoted her professional life to public service, as an advocate for both children and older Americans, and she is uniquely qualified to build upon the successes of CMS and enhance the efficacy of the CHIP program at the national, state and local levels.”
Throughout her career, Nablo, a long-time NASUAD member, has promoted the importance of improving the health and welfare for all individuals across the lifespan. Most recently, as the Commissioner of the Virginia Department for the Aging, a position to which she was appointed in 2007, Nablo tirelessly worked to protect essential services for seniors, and to enhance access to, and the delivery of, long-term services and supports. NASUAD Executive Director, Martha Roherty, applauds Nablo’s accomplishments, saying, “As Commissioner, she focused her visionary leadership abilities on positioning the Commonwealth to most effectively meet the complex and changing needs of older Virginians, and her efforts will resonate well into the future.”
Echoing these sentiments, NASUAD President and Commissioner of the Alabama Department of Senior Services, Irene Collins, recognizes that “While Linda’s presence at the Virginia Department for the Aging will surely be missed by the Commonwealth and its citizens, in her new role at CMS, she will have the opportunity to continue addressing the needs, and impacting the lives, of society’s most vulnerable citizens.”
Prior to her appointment as Commissioner, Nablo served as the Director of the Division of Maternal and Child Health for the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), where she administered Virginia’s SCHIP program, Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS), as well as Virginia’s preventive health care program for children, the Early Periodic Screening and Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT). Nablo has also served as the Director of SignUpNow, a statewide non-profit initiative designed to assist communities enroll eligible children in Virginia’s Medicaid and FAMIS programs, as the Director of Public Policy for Voices for Virginia’s Children, and as the Manager of Planning and Policy for Virginia’s Department of Juvenile Justice.
