Standards & Certification
Standards for Information and Referral represent benchmarks for quality and comprehensive professional information and referral programs. Through the years, the National Aging Information and Referral Support Center has played an integral role in shaping I&R standards. In 1990, the National Aging I&R Support Center created the first National Older Americans Act Information and Referral Standards. Today, one universal set of AIRS National Standards are recognized by specialized and generic I&Rs including the aging network. The National I&R Support Center continues to review new iterations of the standards to ensure they meet the needs of the aging network.
Certification for I&R Specialists in Aging is a professional credential that recognizes knowledge and skills required to perform information and referral in aging. Many states are moving forward with certification to demonstrate professional readiness of their information and referral staff. CIRS-A , the aging specialty certification program was developed by NASUA in partnership with AIRS. It was designed to build on the existing AIRS Certification program while being customized for the aging field.
